Survery on the Health State of Laboratory Mice Produced in a Conventional Animal Facility

Abstract
We investigated the health states of laboratory mice produced in a conventional laboratory animal facility. Ectoparasitic infection was not detected. However, pinworms were detected from all the examined mice by the sucrose buoyant methods.
Histopathologically, lesions were found in livers, spleens, lungs and hearts. In the liver, focal necrosis infiltrated with lymphocytes or neutrophils were seen in ICR, BALB/c, DBA, CBA, CSH/He mice. A Cholangitis was seen in a BALB/c mice. All the mice show the extrameduallary hemapoiesis.
In the lung, thickness of alverolar walls and congestion were main lesions in BALB/c mice. In a BALB/c mice, pericarditie were found.
Serologically, positive antiaera to mouse hepatitis virus, Mycoplasma pulmonis, Sendal virus and Bacillus piliformis were detected at 100, 38.8, 2, 8 percent from 44 examined mice.
In this survey, we concluded that the mice produced in the conventional laboratory animal facility were severely infected with various microorganisms.
